MISSION STATEMENT

A Lush In Rio is an organization dedicated to the humorous, the clever, the witty. We seek to make ourselves laugh primarily through print and audio media. Any laughter from other persons is purely coincidental.

We shall make all reasonable efforts to support the humorous work of those as fortunate or less fortunate than ourselves, in whatever form it may take, with the complete understanding that success may breed more success. We shall also make all unreasonable efforts to piggyback on that success, or to mooch off the success of those more fortunate than ourselves, with the complete understanding that there may be a job as a PA or EA for one of us down the line.

A Lush In Rio understands and respects both the fluctuations of taste, and the liberal guilt caused by condoning creative homogeny. We shall visit the fringes of humor just as often as we cling to its pop- or anti-pop-culture base.

We shall publish or advertise all works in as timely a manner as possible, forgoing sleep if necessary, but never forgoing food or drink. We are not masochists. We may, however, be sadists.

We shall never discourage well-meaning profanity. We shall ALWAYS discourage douchebags whose work is in poor taste. We believe reasonable people can tell the difference, and the difference shall always be defined by committee.

HISTORY

A Lush In Rio was originally conceived as Nabo! by its co-founder, Paul Vargas. Attempts to purchase the URL for the Nabo! site were unsuccessful, and a three-day brainstorming session bore fruit after the session was abandoned. He went out for drinks, came back at one in the morning, and started playing with anagrams. Then the ghost of Bobby Short came to him in a dream. Short threw the founder into a piano and beat him with a copy of How Sondheim Found His Sound. The book's cover bore mysterious stains.

When he awoke from the dream, he found that a person or persons (or a ghost?) had marked its territory in the corner of his bedroom. Additionally, "A LUSH IN RIO" was spelled in Alpha-Bits on his desk. He purchased the URL ten minutes later.

A Lush In Rio was the first literary organization to publish future Nobel Laureate Grant Krotsky. Krotsky went on to author more than one hundred novels about a family of giant squirrels who do remarkably well for themselves after moving to Phoenix, ME, and buying up old lobster shacks to turn into luxury condominiums. He demanded his pieces be removed from the site shortly after his being crowned "The King Of Phoenix And Squirrels (Mutually Exclusive)."
